LEO on-stage

HI THERE

A master of his craft, Leo is a multidisciplinary artist.  With extensive performance credits on and off Broadway, internationally and across the U.S., Leo has never squarely fit into any one box, but he’s known for taking on gritty and sometimes deliciously deplorable roles to which he brings an intensity that rivets audiences at every show.  From the grit of The Emcee, to the deplorable Black Stache, and heartfelt and earnest Tateh in Ragtime, Leo loves committing to it all.   It’s a close tie between the Emcee in Cabaret (for which he won Best Actor in the 2009 Houston Excellence Awards), and Riff in West Side Story (for which he performed the role 5 times over 4 consecutive years).  Leo is honored to have shared the stage and worked with theatre legends Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone, Shirley Jones, Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Billy Porter.  He treasures the play, Somewhere, by Matthew Lopez, starring Priscilla Lopez,  in which he originated the role of Jamie McRea when it premiered in 2011 at The Old Globe in San Diego.  Director legends Alan Johnson (West Side Story) and George C. Wolfe (Shuffle Along) elevated Leo’s maturity and gravity as an artist.

Broadway credits

Jesus Christ Superstar (debut); Shuffle Along (standby for Brooks Ashmanskas, and later taking over the role) directed by George C. Wolfe, choreographed by Savion Glover; and School of Rock, where he channeled a touch of David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Jem of Jem and the Holograms in his spiky blonde wig!

Off-Broadway

Leo originated roles in two premiere plays which have since successfully been published.  Bobby in Finks by Joe Gilford and Pluto in Jasper in Deadland by Hunter Foster and Ryan Scott Oliver.

Showbiz highlight

In 2016, Leo met his idol, The Great Lady of Comedy - Carol Burnett, after her show at The Beacon Theatre in NYC.  Inspired by her hilarious, honest, and wry characters, he always admires her compassionate way of sharing herself with her audiences.

"In years to come, the world will be divided into two groups.  Those who’ve been fortunate enough to work with Leo, and those who haven’t. I count myself very lucky indeed to be in the first group.  Just living in the same city as Leo gives comfort beyond all understanding.  Having him in your show? Bliss. He's clever, open, fun, surprising and utterly dependable. And then, of course, there's his generosity of spirit. Leo is that artist who can do it all, but he’s also the guy you’d want around to help re-start civilization if it suddenly went belly-up, the guy you’d want in your lifeboat — and an absolute joy, onstage and off.”

- RICK ELICE (Writer of Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher, and most recently directed Leo in Woodstock (new Broadway Musical Workshop)
